Jira: RHCLOUD-52393

Storybook 10 adoption — Vite + Vitest addon, stories for all components

Part of the console-wide SB10 migration. CI note (review feedback): the Storybook interaction tests do not run in CI on this stack — storybook.yml does not trigger for fork PRs until the workflow lands on master, and Konflux runs lint + unit only. All 34 tests pass locally (clean-room npm ci + verify); the interaction-test CI gate applies to every PR after this merges. (epic RHCLOUD-49430), on the hcc-storybook-hub 0.3.0 stack — Vite/Vitest, retiring the EOL jest-based test-runner.

No production code changes. Dead-code removal and restructuring follow in separate PRs against this test net.

19 story files · 23 interaction tests · 9 unit tests ported to Vitest · jest and cypress CT retired · all checks green.

Why this repo

It's the landing page's widget library: 11 components exposed via module federation and rendered remotely by widget-layout from dashboard-templates config — plus the Landing composition that chrome mounts at the root path. Stories are the isolated contract surface at that federation boundary.

What changed

  • Storybook: hub createMainConfig (react-vite, addon-vitest, msw); stories for the 11 federated card widgets, the SimpleServiceWidget shell, support-case widget (msw-backed, both states), recently-visited (mocked useLastVisited), all four routes — including the Landing composition contract (mounts widgetLayout/./WidgetLayout, layoutType passthrough) — icons, and PdfEntry. The scalprum loader and useLastVisited are stubbed so stories test this repo's wiring, not the federation runtime
  • CI: storybook.yml with build + interaction-test jobs — the Vitest addon runs stories directly in headless chromium. (This repo previously had no GH workflows at all — Konflux-only.)
  • jest retired: unit suite ported to Vitest (happy-dom)
  • cypress CT retired: the single CT spec's assertion is covered by the acs-widget story. E2E untouched (13 specs), custom-command types moved to e2e.ts. CT was broken on pristine master (swc-plugin WASM) — that failure class goes with it
  • Build fixes: ~ webpack import prefixes dropped from 404.scss/Logout.scss (@import→@use); library-origin Sass deprecations silenced via the vite pipeline; stories excluded from tsconfig (moduleResolution: node can't resolve SB10 type exports)

Planned follow-ups (against this test net)

  1. Dead-code removal: Logout (not routed/imported/exposed), Maintenance (unreachable), the 404 catch-all + APP_NAVIGATION handler (chrome's exact-/ CRD route unmounts the app on any path change), PermissionContext, NotificationsProvider, unused hooks
  2. Restructure around the federation exposes (features/landing/, widgets/<Name>/)
  3. i18n wrap (RHCLOUD-52217) — stories become the copy-drift guard

Verification

Check Result
Vitest (unit + storybook) 25 files, 32/32 tests
build-storybook green, zero Sass deprecation warnings
fec build green
eslint clean
npm ci dry-run 0 problems

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added Storybook coverage for routes, widgets, icons, service links, empty states, and feature-flag variations.
    • Added automated Storybook interaction testing in Chromium through CI workflows.
    • Added mocked service-worker support for more realistic Storybook scenarios.
  • Refactor

    • Migrated unit testing from Jest to Vitest.
    • Retired Cypress component testing while retaining E2E support.
    • Updated Sass usage to modern module syntax.
  • Tests

    • Added Vitest coverage for landing-page behavior and component interactions.

Walkthrough

The PR replaces Jest and Cypress component testing with Vitest, adds Storybook configuration and interaction-tested stories for components and routes, and adds a GitHub Actions workflow to build Storybook and run its browser tests. Cypress E2E testing remains configured.

Changes

Vitest and Cypress component-test transition

Layer / File(s) Summary
Test runner setup and configuration
package.json, vitest.config.ts, config/setupTests.ts, jest.config.js
Vitest scripts, projects, and setup replace the Jest configuration. Package scripts and dependencies change to support Vitest and Storybook testing.
Retire Cypress component testing and update existing tests
cypress.config.ts, config/webpack.cy.config.js, cypress/component/*, cypress/support/*, src/__tests__/App.test.tsx, src/routes/__tests__/Landing.test.tsx
Cypress component-test configuration, support files, and the AcsWidget test are removed. Cypress E2E command types are declared in E2E support, and existing tests use Vitest mocks.

Storybook runtime and coverage

Layer / File(s) Summary
Configure Storybook rendering and mocks
.storybook/*, public/mockServiceWorker.js
Storybook gains preview decorators, Chrome and Scalprum mocks, and MSW support.
Add component and route stories
src/components/*.stories.tsx, src/components/widgets/*.stories.tsx, src/moduleEntries/*.stories.tsx, src/routes/*.stories.tsx
Stories add rendering and interaction assertions for components, widgets, and routes, including link targets, feature-flag behavior, and support-case states.
Build and test Storybook in CI
.github/workflows/storybook.yml
The workflow builds Storybook and uploads the output, then runs Storybook interaction tests with Playwright Chromium.

Supporting lint, TypeScript, and style updates

Layer / File(s) Summary
Update tooling exclusions and SCSS imports
.eslintignore, eslint.config.js, .gitignore, tsconfig.json, src/routes/404.scss, src/routes/Logout.scss
Lint and TypeScript exclusions are updated for Storybook and generated output. The two route stylesheets use @use instead of @import.

Use Node.js 22 in both Storybook jobs.

Node.js 20 reached end of life on March 24, 2026, and no longer receives upstream security fixes. Storybook 10 requires Node.js 20.19+ or 22.12+, and Vitest 4 supports Node.js 22.

♻️ Suggested fix
-          node-version: 20
+          node-version: 22

Apply this change in both the build and test jobs.

Issue body actions

### Clear and concise description of the problem

Documentation explain what `threads` config option does very poorly. We need to give a better description and it&#39;s difference from `--runInBand` in jest.

### Suggested solution

  * Enables isolation, if there is no `--no-isolate`
  * If disabled, test files will run one after another

Is there anything more we could add?

### Alternative

We&#39;ve actually updated docs today, I forgot we have an open issue. For anyone wondering:

This option is different from Jest&#39;s `--runInBand`. Vitest uses workers not only for running tests in parallel, but also to provide isolation. By disabling this option, your tests will run sequentially, but in the same global context, so you must provide isolation yourself.

This might cause all sorts of issues, if you are relying on global state (frontend frameworks usually do) or your code relies on environment to be defined separately for each test (like, `@vue/test-utils`). But can be a speed boost for Node tests (up to 3 times faster), that don&#39;t necessarily rely on global state or can easily bypass that.

With `vitest` there is `exclude` in the config, but that seems to always exclude the files, even if I add them to `--testNamePattern`, and there doesn&#39;t seem to be any option to exclude tests with a command line argument.

We have two sets of test: Simple JS test and slow visual tests. The simple test filenames match `*.test.js`, while the visual tests match `*.visual.test.js`. With `jest` we could have separate commands to run only one of the types, e.g.:

    `{
      &quot;scripts&quot;: {
        &quot;test&quot;: &quot;CI=true jest --testPathIgnorePatterns=.*.visual.test.js$&quot;,
        &quot;visual&quot;: &quot;CI=true jest visual.test.js --runInBand --ci --forceExit --detectOpenHandles&quot;
      },
      ...
    }
    `

From jest help:

    ` --testPathIgnorePatterns An array of regexp pattern strings that are
                                        matched against all test paths before
                                        executing the test. </excerpt>

Use the Vitest unit script in the Tekton task.

--runInBand is not a Vitest 4.1.12 option. Vitest rejects it before running tests, so this CI task fails even when Chromium is installed. Use the existing unit project and Vitest’s supported --no-cache option.

Suggested fix
-      npm test --  --runInBand --no-cache
+      npm run test:unit -- --no-cache

Comment thread package.json Resolved
@riccardo-forina
riccardo-forina force-pushed the feat/storybook-adoption branch from 8efd1a0 to 27147e2 Compare October 20, 2026 17:24
Adopts the hcc-storybook-hub 0.3.0 stack (react-vite + addon-vitest;
the EOL jest-based test-runner is dropped by the hub). Adds Storybook
with stories and interaction tests for all components.
No production code changes - dead-code removal and restructuring follow
in separate PRs against this test net.

Storybook:
- .storybook via the hub's createMainConfig (msw, chrome mock aliases);
  useLastVisited and the scalprum loader are stubbed through
  extraAliases so stories exercise this repo's components and
  composition wiring without loading real remotes
- 19 story files / 23 interaction tests: the 11 federated card widgets,
  the SimpleServiceWidget shell (internal + external link variants),
  the support-case widget (msw-backed WithCases + NoCases states),
  recently-visited, all four routes incl. the Landing composition
  contract (scope/module/layoutType passthrough), icons, PdfEntry
- storybook.yml CI with build and interaction-test jobs: the Vitest
  addon runs the stories directly in headless chromium, no built
  Storybook or HTTP server needed

Testing:
- jest retired: the unit suite is ported to Vitest (happy-dom); the
  Landing test stubs the scalprum remote mount to test its own wiring
- verify (and the Konflux unit-tests script) run the unit project only:
  the storybook project needs playwright browsers the container image
  does not carry - CI runs it in the dedicated storybook.yml job
- cypress component testing retired: the single CT spec's assertion is
  covered by the acs-widget story. E2E specs are untouched; the
  custom-command type declarations moved from the CT support file to
  e2e.ts. CT was broken on pristine master (swc-plugin WASM
  incompatibility) - that failure class is removed with it

Build fixes along the way:
- webpack '~' import prefixes dropped from 404.scss / Logout.scss
  (Vite's sass pipeline does not resolve them), @import migrated to @use
- Sass deprecations silenced for library-origin IDs (the fec utilities
  mixins use global built-ins) via the Storybook vite pipeline
- stories excluded from tsconfig: moduleResolution 'node' cannot
  resolve @storybook/react-vite's export-conditioned types; the SB
  stack type-checks stories itself

Verification: 32/32 tests, build-storybook green (zero Sass
deprecation warnings), fec build green, eslint clean, npm ci dry-run
0 problems.

Note on "All CI green": the Storybook interaction tests have not run in CI for this stack. Konflux now runs only lint and test:unit (2 tests), and storybook.yml has no runs. These are fork PRs and the workflow isn't on the default branch yet. With jest and Cypress CT retired, CI is currently thinner than the PR description suggests (they do pass locally: 27/27 on #927's head).

Also: #924 to #927 all target master while stacking on each other, so each PR shows the combined diff. They need to merge in order.

LGTM. Konflux green, Storybook suite passes locally. The CI-coverage thread stays open for whenever the Konflux side gets sorted.
